Ingredients
Sesame Masala Powder
- 2 tablespoons roasted chana dal
- 2 tablespoons urad dal
- 1 tablespoon dried coconut
- 20-22 black pepper corns
- ¼ cup sesame seeds/ til
- 1 lemon size tamarind
- 20-22 curry leaves
- 10-12 dried red chillies
- ¼ teaspoon asafoetida
For Tadka
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 tablespoon ghee/clarified butter
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 tablespoon roasted chana dal
- 1 tablespoon urad dal
- ¼ cup raw peanuts
- 10-12 cashews
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 2-3 dried red chillies
- 3-4 cups boiled rice
- 3-4 tablespoon sesame masala powder
- salt to taste

Steps In Making
Sesame Masala Powder
- In a pan add roasted chana dal and urad dal and dry roast them for 2 minutes or until the dal gets light brown colour.
- Now add dried coconut and black peppercorns and roast for another minute.
- Further add sesame seeds and roast for two minutes.
- Now add deseeded tamarind, curry leaves and dried red chillies. Roast everything for two minutes. Do not roast on high heat else the ingredients might burn.
- Now let the mixture cool down completely and then grind it in a mixer grinder on pulse mode, until it gets a coarse texture. Do not grind the ingredients when they are hot else they might release oil and the mixture will become sticky. Add asafoetida and mix well.
- The sesame masala powder is ready. You can store it in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for upto 2-3 weeks.
- To make the sesame rice in a pan heat oil and ghee and then add mustard seeds, urad dal and roasted chana dal. Let it turn light brown in colour.
- Now add raw peanuts and roast for two minutes.
- Then add cashews, curry leaves and dried red chillies and roast for a minute.
- Now add boiled rice, salt, 3-4 tablespoons of the sesame masala powder we prepared and mix everything well.
- The sesame rice is ready. Serve hot.
Recipe Notes
- If you are using fresh coconut then you can not store the masala powder.
