Thanni Chutney

Ingredients

For Chutney
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal
  • 4-5 garlic cloves
  • 1 inch ginger
  • 2 medium onions
  • 4-5 green chillies
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • ½ cup raw peanuts
  • ¼ cup roasted chana dal
  • 2 inch tamarind
  • salt to taste
  • handful of fresh coriander
For Tadka
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  • 1 tablespoon urad dal
  • 1 tablespoon roasted chana dal
  • 12-14 curry leaves
  • 2-3 dried red chillies
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2-3 cups water

Steps In Making

  1. Heat oil in a kadai. Now add mustard seeds, urad dal and roast it for few seconds or till the mustard seeds start to splutter and the dal turns light golden brown in colour.
  2. Now add garlic cloves and ginger and roast for 20-30 seconds.
  3. Further add roughly chopped onions and cook for 3-4 minutes or until they get light golden brown in colour.
  4. Then add green chillies and curry leaves and mix well.
  5. Now add the raw peanuts and roasted chana dal and cook for 3-4 minutes till the peanuts gets light golden brown colour.
  6. Once done add tamarind and salt and mix well.
  7. Now let the mixture cool down completely and then transfer it in a mixer grinder along with fresh coriander and water and grind until smooth. The chutney is ready.
For Tadka
  1. To prepare the tadka in a pan heat oil and then add mustard seeds, urad dal and roasted chana dal. Roast it for few seconds or till the mustard seeds start to splutter and the dal turns light golden brown.
  2. Now add curry leaves and dried red chillies and roast for 10-12 seconds.
  3. Further add finely chopped onions and then cook until light golden brown in colour.
  4. Now add the chutney we prepared earlier along with 2-3 cups of water and mix well. The consistency of the chutney is thin.
  5. The chutney is ready. Serve with idli and dosa.

Recipe Notes

  • If you don’t have roasted chana dal then you can replace it with the same amount of raw peanuts.
  • If you are using roasted peanuts then you can skip the roasting step.
